In Sacred Loneliness: Supplement
The question is this: What is the wisest course to be followed by Latter-day Saints: continue trying to put into practice plural marriage with the laws of the nation against it and the opposition of sixty millions of people , at the expense of the seizure and forfeiture of all the temples, and the suspension of all the ordinances administered therein, both the living and the dead, and the imprisonment of the First Presidency and the Twelve and of those at the head of his family in the Church, and confiscation of personal property of the people (all of which in itself would end the practice) or, after suffering as we have suffered because of our obedience this principle to cease the practice and submit to the law, and to achieve to remain at home the Prophets, the Apostles, and parents, so they can educate people and take over the duties of the church, and also leave the Temples in the hands of the saints so that they can handle both the ordinances of the gospel for the living and the dead?
The Lord showed me in vision and revelation exactly what would happen if we put an end to this practice. If we had not finished, I would have done anything ... none of the men in this temple of Logan, for all ordinances would have been suspended in all the land of Zion. Confusion would reign throughout Israel, and many men have been jailed. This difficulty would come upon the whole Church and would have forced us to end the practice.
Now the question is whether to suspend or so depending on how the Lord has shown us, and leave our Prophets and Apostles and fathers free men, and temples in the hands of the members, to that the dead may be redeemed. A large number of them have already been released from prison in the world of spirits by this people, and what to continue or to terminate this work? This is the question I ask the Latter-day Saints. You must judge for yourselves. I do not answer, but I say that this is precisely the condition we as a people we would be if we had not taken the decision we made. ... I saw exactly what would happen if something were not done about it. This spirit has been on me for a long time. But I would say this: I have let all the temples out of our hands, I would have let himself imprisoned and allowed me to imprison all the other men if God from heaven sent I would not do what I did, and when the time came that was sent to do that, everything was very clear to me, I went before the Lord and wrote down what he told me to write ...
I leave this with you to ponder and not view this. The Lord is working with us.? (Cache Stake Conference, Logan, Utah, Sunday 1. November 1891. Reported in Deseret Weekly, November 14, 1891) Doctrine and Covenants, Official Declaration 1 The conclusions that can be drawn from this text, I leave respectfully to each criterion, in particular, freely and spontaneously what to think and say my fellow genre. I personally think is very striking and eloquent at the same time, for the first time, the laws of a nation, with its sixty million inhabitants at that time in history, reveals that condemnation proceedings, as being contrary to morality and decency that should govern a civilized society. Have you been compromised with God in human thinking and it has imposed its will, condemning his conduct polygamous? With all due respect, I believe that this is not the case, you decide.
